About Nimes
Nîmes: Gallo-Roman city – birthplace of Alphonse Daudet - famous for textiles, especially denim (‘de Nîmes’), and tauromachy, otherwise known as bullfighting. Apart from a range of interesting museums, Nîmes boasts an Roman amphitheatre twinned to the one in Arles, the Maison Carrée built by Emperor Augustus and also dating back to about 1BC, the magnificent 18th century Jardin de la Fontaine, and more recently the Carré d’Art, designed by architect Norman Foster to house the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art and its media library.
